The local South Jersey business I’m promoting this month is not a magic shop, and it has nothing to do with a Magic Fingers bed. Mindy’s Magic Touch is an entrepreneurial business run by Mindy Kleinman, head artist and gift designer. Mindy and I met way back at one of those “Mommy & Me” classes when our sons were not yet even close to being potty trained. Years later, we are still friends, and I’m so glad for that! By All Writes: Why did you decide to start Mindy’s Magic Touch? When did you start it?
Mindy Kleinman: I actually “fell into” my business. I was making party favors for my son’s 1st birthday party. The ladies overseeing our party (at the Gymboree in Cherry Hill, NJ) were very impressed with my homemade favors and started asking all sorts of questions. As a result of their initial inquiry, I customized party favors for their children’s upcoming birthday parties and then dropped off business cards, product samples and business flyers, newly created at their request. Once I received my first phone order, I realized I was running a start-up business. I officially started Mindy’s Magic Touch in April of 2004.
BAW: What products and services do you offer potential customers?
MK: I specialize in hand-painted, personalized gifts and party favors for all occasions. While my main focus is on party favors for children’s birthday parties, I also fulfill gift orders for birthdays, babies, anniversaries, Sweet 16s, and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. Additionally, I offer a unique line of customized corporate gifts (for realtors, local banks, etc.), along with personalized Christmas ornaments, year-round Judaica gifts, and women’s fashion accessories.
BAW: Who makes a good customer for you?
MK: My main customers are moms in search of memorable, long-lasting birthday party favors. Other customers include realtors and local banks (for corporate gifts), or anyone in need of a gift that is fun, creative, and unique. Because Mindy’s Magic Touch offers such a diverse selection of gifts, I really have something for everyone…
BAW: What is your ultimate “happy moment” when working with your customers?
MK: It’s very gratifying when a customer takes the time to email or text me a note saying how pleased their guests were with the party favors or how much a friend loved their gift. Through my business, I have acquired some great friends! And so, through these personal relationships, many of my customers become repeat customers. It’s so much more than mere business transactions and order fulfillment.
BAW: If you could relocate your gift/party favor customization business to anywhere in the world, where would you go, and why?
MK: To be honest, I wouldn’t move. New Jersey has been my home these past 10 years, and I have so many valued friends here. And, since I ship nationwide, it really doesn’t matter WHERE I work. If I absolutely had to relocate my business, I would move into a retail storefront. This would give me room to grow regarding artistic creativity and product displays.
BAW: What is your favorite book of all time and why? Please share generously!
MK: My favorite book is actually the Imponderables series of books by David Feldman. These little gems are packed with interesting facts and answers to some of life’s most puzzling questions. I think I enjoy this series in particular because the books allow me to educate myself continually, which I find enjoyable.
